This past weekend we traveled to Sylvania, Ohio to compete in Motown Throwdown.  We were seeded first in a pool with two other teams, Matador and Illusion.  In the first game of the day we came out strong against Illusion, securing a relatively easy 13-5 victory.  Next up was Matador, the second seed in the pool. Through torrential downpours and several rain delays we dominated with an unshakable offense and a defense whose intensity could not be matched.  After defeating Matador 13-2, we faced Midnight Meat Train in the crossovergame that would determine whether or not the team would reach the championship bracket.  The rain continued through the game, and although we let up several breaks late in the game, we held on to win 13-10.
Our first game of Sunday was against Jurassic Shark in pre-quarters.  We definitely lacked a certain spark that had been evident in the team throughout their Saturday games, and after a marathon point, Jurassic Shark took half 7-5.  Looking deflated in the second half, Jurassic Shark ran over us to finish the game 13-6.  After being eliminated from championship contention, we moved into the 9th place round robin bracket, meaning that the team would face three more teams throughout the day.  First up was a rematch against Matador, but the game on Sunday looked much different than Saturday’s rout.  Matador’s zone frustrated our offense into taking risky throws and turning the disc over carelessly, while our defense struggled to consistently get breaks like they had the day before.  The game ended 12-9 in our favor.  With two more games to play, we looked very tired.  During the next game against Spoiler, we fell behind early, but after a speech by coach Nick Kaczmarek about the importance of breaking the opponent’s will, Impulse blew Spoiler out of the water in the second half, and took the win 13-10.  In the last game of the day, we faced off against Cincinnati Hustle to secure a 9th place finish.  Still riding the energy from the surge against Spoiler, we jumped out early and secured break after break to defeat Hustle 13-6.

In two weeks, we will head to Blaine, Minnesota for Youth Club Championships, the premier event of the season.  The next two weeks will consist of preparing mentally and physically to take on the best youth teams in the pursuit of our first ever national championship.

What aspect of your game are you going to focus on this season?
-This season I am going to be focusing on becoming an all-around better player, which consists of all aspects of the game.

Team you’d most like to beat at YCC
-Seattle is the team I'd like the beat the most, because they have always beaten us and also because they are a very talented and competitive team.

Who do you think are the top teams to watch at youth nationals this year?
-The top teams to watch at YCC's this year would most likely be Seattle, Minnesota, Boston, and Delaware valley.

Player profile - Scott "Trucks" Trimble

For the rest of the season, the Impulse blog will be interviewing various members of the team, starting with a third-year veteran, Scott Trimble.

High school – Hampton

Position? – Combo

How did you get into ultimate?

- A few of my friends talked about it my freshman year, and after I finished playing football in the fall I started playing ultimate and haven't stopped since.

What aspect of your game are you going to focus on this season?

- Defense, this is my first year on the D line after spending my first two years on the O line.  I really want to step up and get the D’s that the team needs for us to be successful.

Team you’d most like to beat at YCC?

– Cincinnati Flying Pig.  The past two years we have lost to them on day one of YCCs, and I would really like to bring it to them this year.

Who do you think are the top teams to watch at youth nationals this year?

- Obviously Minnesota, because they finished first last year they should still be a great team. Not too sure about Seattle or Boston, but they always have strong showings.

Pittsburgh Impulse has never won YCC, what will Impulse need to do to take gold for the first time?

- Chemistry is going to have to play a huge role this year, but I think our physical abilities will also make a huge impact after all the workouts we are doing this summer.

Future ultimate plans?

- Playing for Oakland will be a great experience during and after summer. This year will be my first in the club series. College is not going to be that great; I won't be attending a college with a team, but instead will be focusing my efforts into transferring to Pitt.

The Beginning: Setting Goals.

With the Impulse season starting up, the team sat down to set some season goals. These goals were something we could work towards throughout the summer, giving us a reason to suffer through all of the pre-practice Tabatas and track workouts. To reach our Outcome Goal of becoming national champions, we set a few process goals to help us along the way. First off, we want be the best conditioned team in the country.  To get there, we decided to have two track workouts a week, along with pre-practice Tabata workouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Our next process goal is to be focused. Being focused was a problem from last year’s Impulse team, so this year we will adjust and improve. Focus will allow us to get more out of every practice, scrimmage, and tournament allowing us to reach our potential. Our last process goal is respect. Respect for our ourselves, our teammates, and our opponents. Respecting our teammates and ourselves is a key element for any team; without chemistry between players, we can never play at our full potential. Respecting our opponents not only puts the notorious Pittsburgh Ultimate under a better light, but it also allows us to understand the opposing teams. Understanding teams is by far the best way to counter their strategies, and take home the national title.
These process goals are what the 2013 Impulse squad will be working for all season long. Conditioning, focus, and respect will lead us to where no other Pittsburgh YCCs team has been before: to a national championship title.

Introducing The League...

Welcome to the first year of The League!  The League is a Pittsburgh-area youth club Ultimate league open to anyone under 19 years of age as of June 1, 2012.  It serves as a way for players to get more playing time after the conclusion of their PHUL season, and before the summer YCCs clubs hit full stride.  It will also serve as the qualifying league for Impulse both this year and in the future.  All players who plan on playing Impulse this summer must play in this league. Every team in The League will be coached by current University of Pittsburgh players.

What is the structure of The League?
Beginning the week preceding May 12th, every team will have one local practice and two centrally-located games.  Practices will be during the week and scheduled by their individual teams/coaches.  Games will be on weekends in Oakland on Pitt's campus.  There may also be skills clinics on game days while teams are not playing their games.

There will be regular-season games on May 12th, May 19th, and June 2nd.  Playoffs (semifinals and finals) will be played on June 9th.

There will be four regionally-based teams, each with a maximum team size of 20.  Players may play in the region they live if they choose, or play elsewhere if they so desire.

Meet the Coaches...

Northwest Region (Pine-Richland/Hampton area)

Marcus Ranii-Dropcho is a sophomore at Pitt, and in his second year on Pitt's A team.  He attended high school at Pine-Richland, and played for Impulse in 2009 and 2010.  He currently anchors Pitt's D line as one if its main handlers.

Scott Marsh is a grad student at Pitt, and playing his first year on Pitt.  He attended the University of Delaware for undergrad, where he played on Delaware Sideshow for four years, including one college nationals appearance.  He is also a D line handler.

Northeast Region (Fox Chapel area)

Alex Thorne is a fourth-year senior at Pitt.  He has played on Pitt's A team all four years.  A North Hills alum, he played for Impulse for four years. Al also played for Team USA at junior worlds in 2008, winning a world championship.  He is currently one of few favorites to win the Callahan award, awarded to the top college player each year.  Alex was 1st team Metro East freshman of the year in 2009, and 1st team all-region for the Ohio Valley region in 2011.

Tyler Degirolamo is a fourth-year senior at Pitt.  He has played on Pitt's A team all four years of his college career, and is one of three team captains.  He is also one of the few favorites to win the Callahan award this year.  The person he is jumping over in the picture to the left is 6'8".  Tyler was 2nd team Metro East freshman of the year (behind Alex) in 2009, and 1st team all-region for the Ohio Valley region in 2011.  Tyler loves candy.

Central Region (Oakland/Squirrel Hill area)

Pat Every is a fourth-year senior at Pitt.  This is his third year on Pitt's A team as a D-line cutter.  He is universally known as one of the funniest people alive, and can bench well over 200 pounds.  He will not wear sleeves.

David Hogan played for Pitt's A team from 2006-2009 as a D-line cutter.  He is currently a trainer/assistant coach for Pitt, and coaches Pittsburgh's U-16 YCCs team in the summer.  He will also not wear sleeves.

Zach Kauffman is a junior at Pitt, a D-line cutter, and a team captain.  He attended Pennsbury high school, and played for Philadelphia's YCCs team for three years, winning a national championship once.  He was also 2nd-team Metro East Freshman of the Year in 2010.  Zach Kauffman will also not be seen wearing sleeves.  Don't worry.

South Region (Mt. Lebanon/Upper St. Clair area)

Aaron Watson is a sophomore at Pitt, playing his second year on the A team as an O-line cutter.  A North Hills alum, he played for Impulse in 2009 and 2010.  His favorite hobbies include skying players on Florida, and skying players on Florida and then Tebowing.

Joe Bender is a freshman at Pitt, playing his first year on the A team as a D-line cutter. He attended high school at Mt. Lebanon, and played a huge role in getting Impulse into YCCs finals in 2011, including throwing the winning goal in semifinals against Boston.  He also played for Impulse in 2010 and 2009.

Julian Hausman is a Mt. Lebo grad and a fifth-year senior on Pitt.  As Ari Weitzman said, Julian is one of few players in college ultimate that could O-line handle one year and then cut on the D-line the next year.  The guy's versatile.  He played three years for Impulse, captaining two of those years.  He was also voted 2nd team All-Region for the Ohio Valley region in 2011.

The League will cost $40 per player.  Proceeds will go towards both U19 and U16 Pittsburgh Open YCCs teams.  Please e-mail league commissioner David Hogan at hogandavidp@gmail.com with any questions or concerns.

No Surf 2011

"YCCs will smack you in the face."

Captain Joe Bender drove this point home to teammates during the post-tournament team meeting. After leading by example all weekend, the words certainly got through.

For Impulse's entire history, the idea behind attending club tournaments was to create that "smack in the face" early and often. 2011 was no different.

Game 1 v. Bear Proof (16-15 L)
A strong opening by both teams led to a 4-4 tie without any breaks and few turnovers. Bear Proof's defensive adjustments, however, led to a 4 point break run against the Impulse offense and half was taken 8-4. Inspiring play from defensive leaders Pat Earles and Kelley McAndrews led to two huge breaks to pull Impulse back into the game - the second of which was a full field huck to Kelley off of a timeout for a layout score. The sidelines exploded! Bear proof locked their game up down the stretch though and exchanged points with the boys from Pittsburgh to a universe point loss.

Game 2 v. EVIL (15-7 L)
The team from Louisville outmatched Impulse athletically from point 1. Their speed and endurance made defense extremely challenging for Impulse, as the team was unable to get a break for the only time all weekend. Impulse's defense was tentative which led to easy incuts, uplines, and break throws. These mistakes almost always led to huck goals. Coaches discussed the importance of defending these aspects of the game. It is imperative that Impulse recognizes that the goal is never only the huck defender's fault - it usually becomes a goal before the huck even goes up.

Game 3 v. Jurassic (14-11 W)
This game was the team's first experience with playing tired and though Impulse played well, the final score was far too close. Impulse had a few chances to run away with the game on extremely long defensive points, but could not muster up the energy to grind into the endzone. Instead, Impulse had more than 10 huck turnovers caused by a combination of lazy cutting and poor decision making. The offensive line played an impressive game with only 3 turnovers - only 1 of which was converted into a break. Joe Bender stood out in particular, throwing 7 goals, catching 2 more, and generating a game high 2 Ds. Kelley McAndrews and Connor Russell joined Bender with 2 Ds each and other players chimed in with great team defense to create 12 individual Ds and 9 more team Ds. While the game was a solid defensive performance, much of it was due to tired play by both team's offense. Conditioning will be paramount from here on out.

Game 4 v. Super Phun Time (17-16 L)
Another universe point loss, same reasons why. A solid offensive game slipped into 3 straight breaks because of lackluster defense after turnovers. Again, Impulse's offense was extremely solid with only 6 total turnovers, but only 2 of them were earned back and this led to a demoralizing run of breaks. Still, Impulse showed resilience and clawed back into the game with a dominating sky by Arlo for a key break. Though the team turned in only 2 Ds all game, teamwork gave them opportunities to win the game. Universe point, however, showcased the team's glaring weakness on defense and a three pass huck string led to a wide open goal. The concept of team defense continues to allude Impulse to this point. The coaches discussed these issues and planned an intensive defensive warmup for Sunday morning.

Game 5 v. Sheet Metal aka Lake Effect (10-9 L)
Coming into this game there were a few changes of personnel from Day 1, Max Sheppard
had been moved from O-Line to D-Line to generate in cuts and offensive flow after the turn,
Scott ‘Trucks’ Trimble and Alec Assaad filled his role cutting on O-Line, Pat Earles was out
with an injured toe and groin, and Brad Romantic was handling on D-Line after missing
Saturday of the tournament. Impulse came out rolling on O and generating lots of turns on D. Up a break early, the Impulse D-Line continued to give Sheet Metal problems on offense but failed to complete the breaks near the goal line after working it up the field with great movement by Luke Bodnar, Graeme Kernick, Max Sheppard, and Sam Van Dusen. Late in the first half with Impulse still up a break; Sheet Metal threw a zone that the O-Line was able to shred effectively with lots of swings and timely hammers over the cup. Despite working it well in zone offense, a few poor decisions led to two breaks consecutively by Sheet Metal to take half 8-7.

Out of half, Impulse found its defensive intensity that it had thrived on early in the game
and got the break back on a huck from Sam Schurer. After much discussion due to a foul call
away from the play, it was ruled a goal. A hold by each team brought the game to 9-9 and a long
point which saw many D’s by both teams ensued. Hard Cap sounded during this point and
Impulse had the disc on the goal line, and called a timeout to set up a play for the win. A failed
end zone play and a quick huck to a bidding player in the end zone by Sheet Metal gave them the win, 10-9 on universe point.

Game 6 v. Ann Arbor Spoiler (15-9 W)
Relegated to the 13th place bracket, Impulse was set to play Ann Arbor’s Spoiler. Slightly
deflated by the universe point loss in the previous round, Impulse came out a little bit slow
despite great play as always on offense by captains, Max Thorne and Joe Bender. Impulse went
up one break pretty early at 3-2 and took half with another at 8-6. Coming out on O to start the
second half the coaches were still convinced that the lead wasn’t big enough and the intensity
still wasn’t there. After O-Line punched in the goal to go up 9-6, the coaches decided to keep the O-Line out for a D point in an attempt to fire up the rest of the team. After earning a turn and getting the disc near their goal line, Impulse completed a huck and called time out to set up an end zone play. After the end zone play failed, a long swing by Spoiler popped up and Graeme Kernick ripped it down toeing the goal line for the Callahan, 10-6 Impulse. This was the spark that the team needed and Impulse rolled for the rest of the half to a 15-9 win.

Game 7 v. Meth Lab (12-10 W)
Playing for 13th, Impulse came out on offense once again. Still feeding off of the energy from last game Impulse scored then broke to go up 2-0. After both teams held on offense for a few points, Meth Lab broke back to put the game on serve until Impulse broke again to go up 7-5. Meth Lab scored to make it 7-6 but Impulse’s offense continued to shred the tired zone of Meth Lab to take half 8-6. Out of half Impulse remained up a break when the rain started to come down hard. The game got sloppy, but Impulse kept composure and brought the game to 12-10 before it was called for lightning. With this win, Impulse finished 13th - breaking seed by one spot. This game saw great team defense with nearly half the team getting a D throughout the game. The win meant that Impulse finished 13th, breaking seed by one spot and
capping off a successful weekend for Impulse.

Coaches Corner:
Overall, I'm really happy with the resiliency the team showed this weekend. The team never gave up and battled to tight games in 6 of 7 contests. We see a few strategical issues with endzone offense and offensive transitions as well as some major work to be done defensively. The key issue, however, has been addressed by the team's goal of going above and beyond with conditioning and training. Our commitment to 3x/week field workouts and 2x/week lifting workouts will turn us into the best conditioned youth team in Pittsburgh history. We MUST follow through.

"YCCs will not smack us in the face."

Impulse Tryouts - Being Prepared

At this moment, Impulse is 41 members strong and still growing. What I mean by this is that every single one of you is part of this team's success. Whether this is your first year trying out or you are a 4 year veteran, this is YOUR team. Whether you make the team, play Impulse B, or just come to tryouts and go no further, know this: you will have contributed to our successes (and/or failures).

In an effort to create the most level playing field possible, the coaching staff has developed the following "tryout keys." These are aimed at making sure you are prepared and know what we value/are looking for.

Impulse Tryout Keys

1. Day 1 will focus on drills, skills, and mini-games. This is in an effort to see how fast you can pick up new concepts that you are unfamiliar with. Put your head down, open up your ears, and open your mind to seeing the game in a new way.

2. Day 2 will focus on game situations and decision making. This is in an effort to see if you can take the concepts from day 1 and apply them to the full-field game. We will be looking to see you carry over day 1 tactics to day 2 scrimmages.

3. Play fast. Our tryout structure is built around the idea of minimizing what you have to think about at any given time. We only want you thinking about 1-2 aspects of the game during drills so that you can focus on exerting maximum effort and hitting top speed. Don't be tentative, don't worry about mistakes, don't hold back. (note: this does not mean play out of control).

4. Play smart. We do not want to see you trying to do things that aren't part of your game. At tryouts, we want to see you push yourself to your limits, but not to try and go beyond them - we have the rest of the summer for that (note: we will push you WAY beyond those limits later). We want to know that all of you can recognize your weaknesses and your strengths and that you can use them to succeed on the Ultimate field.

5. Be ready to be tired. We have planned water breaks and rest periods, but when we say go - you gotta GO! Tryouts will be fast-paced and full of action and learning. We intend to pack in at least 10 new Ultimate tactics on Day 1. Also, be prepared to run a mile at the end of Day 1.

6. Be a teammate. You will be playing with players who are from different schools, use different systems, are of different ages, and are at different skill levels. YOU have a responsibility to accept where they are as players and adjust YOUR game to help the TEAM succeed. Push your teammates, cheer for them, help them improve.

What to Bring

1. White AND dark shirts. White is WHITE, not gray. Dark is black, blue, brown, etc.

2. Cleats

3. Running sneakers (for the mile)

4. Water bottle (we will have a water cooler for refills)
